Training, why do you do it? Chances are it is because you want to obtain a certain outcome, which could be anything from improved health to improved performance or improved physical appearance. There are countless reasons to train due to the countless benefits exercise has, but it’s important to grasp the fact that just because something is good, it doesn’t mean that more is better.

There is a sweet spot for everything – the amount of food you eat, the amount of water you drink, the amount of exercise you do, and the amount of sleep and rest you get. A sweet spot can be defined as the optimum point or combination of factors to guarantee a good return for your input or efforts. Going beyond that sweet spot can more often than not become harmful to your progress and your health, and at the very least, not be beneficial at all. Finding that sweet spot is imperative to getting a good return from your training investment.

The Sweet Spot of Training Investment

If you find yourself putting in a lot of work and effort, and your results don’t reflect that hard work, then look at these 3 things such as:

The 3 Things

  1. The quality of your training program. Is it conducive to your goals, does it align with your abilities, etc?
  2. The quantity in which you are training. There is a big possibility you could be over-training and under-recovering.
  3. Are you spending all this time in the gym and undoing it all in the kitchen? Remember – you can’t out-train a bad diet!

Don’t confuse efforts with results. Being busy doesn’t mean you are being productive.  Make sure you are getting a return from your workouts and aren’t just training for the sake of it, with no change towards your desired progression.
